DCS Mission Studio

Edit existing missions,
keep the original.

A Windows app that opens a DCS World mission (.miz), edits groups, zones, weather, triggers, radio presets, AI tasks and more, and saves the result under a new name. It never runs the mission's Lua and keeps everything it does not change.

Download for Windows

v0.4.0a6 alpha. Tested on Windows 11 (64-bit); Windows 10 is untested. The executable is not signed, so Windows may show a security warning; how the warning appears for the downloaded ZIP has not been checked. ZIP about 17 MB. No Python install needed. The interface is in Japanese.

It never writes to the mission you opened. It reads your DCS install folder only when you point it there. It connects to the network only for the online map (off by default) and for update checks. The online map fetches the map tiles for the area on screen from the OpenStreetMap Foundation's tile server, which receives the tile numbers and your PC's IP address. An update check fetches the signed update information from this site (freedomflight.jp) when you choose ヘルプ › 更新を確認... (Help › Check for updates), or at startup once a day if you turn on 起動時に更新を確認する (check for updates at startup) in the 設定 (Settings) menu (off by default). Mission contents and file names are never sent.

Check before you use a saved mission.

This is an alpha under development. Opening its output in the DCS Mission Editor and saving it again has not been checked yet. Always open an edited mission in the DCS Mission Editor and check it before use. For missions that go on a server, use a copy that you opened and saved again in the Mission Editor.

Missions saved with 0.4.0a2: versions up to 0.4.0a2 rewrote the names of the files inside a mission on every save. Files with non-ASCII names (such as localized briefing images) could stop being found by the mission. 0.4.0a3 fixes this (and so do the later versions). If a mission you saved with 0.4.0a2 contains such files, edit the original again with a newer version, or open it in the Mission Editor and check that no image or other resource is missing.

In-app update: if you use 0.4.0a5, choose ヘルプ › 更新を確認... (Help › Check for updates) to replace it with 0.4.0a6 after the signature is verified. Versions up to 0.4.0a4 do not have this, so install from the ZIP above by hand. Your settings and recovery files are kept in your user folder and carry over.

What it does

Groups and units

Copy, delete and rename groups, add and remove units, move and rotate groups, move the start point. Place new ground, ship and static groups, and air-start aircraft and helicopters (for western countries, when the mission has an aircraft of the same type in that country). Deleting something that is referenced by ID is refused; name and script references are shown for you to confirm.

Routes, zones and weather

Edit route values and the route table (add, remove and reorder points after the second; on routes whose stored ETAs match the Mission Editor's calculation, ETAs are recomputed too), add, rename, reshape and delete trigger zones, and edit the date, time and static weather (clouds, precipitation, fog, dust, halo, turbulence).

Triggers, radios and AI tasks

Change the arguments of trigger conditions and actions (targets, times, flag values and more) and delete or reorder conditions, actions and triggers, in missions whose generated trigger code matches a fresh generation. Message texts, aircraft radio preset frequencies, route-point AI task options (including numeric ones) and enabled flags, group frequencies and briefing texts can be edited too.

Pick and move on the map

Groups, routes and zones on a north-up map in the middle of the window. Pick a group on the map and drag it to move it (one edit when you let go, which can be undone), or right-click it to rename, copy, delete and more. With your DCS install folder set, towns, airfields and beacons are drawn too, and the mission can be exported as KML or GeoJSON. Coastlines and borders come from Natural Earth. Turn on the online map to show OpenStreetMap under the sketch (© OpenStreetMap contributors).

Undo and Save As

Every edit can be undone and redone. Saving is Save As only and never overwrites the original; replacing an earlier output keeps a backup. A failed save leaves both the original file and your edits unchanged.

Recovery of unsaved edits

While you edit, a recovery copy is written to your user folder. The next start lists the copies and opens only the one you pick. Nothing is restored automatically.

How to start

  1. Extract the ZIP anywhere and start DcsMissionStudio.exe in the folder. Keep the files in the folder together.
  2. In ミッションを始める (Start a mission) above the map, choose ミッションを開く… (Open mission) and pick a .miz. To try it out, 合成デモで試す (Try the synthetic demo) works without any DCS data.
  3. Pick a group in the list on the left or on the map, edit it on the right and press 適用 (Apply). On the map, drag to move and right-click for the actions. 元に戻す (Undo) takes a change back.
  4. Save with 別名保存 (Save As) under a new name, then open the file in the DCS Mission Editor and check it.
  5. For the type catalogue and the map layer, choose DCSのインストール先を指定… (Set DCS install folder) in the 設定 (Settings) menu and select your DCS World folder. It is only read.
Alpha limits

It cannot place aircraft for a western country without one of the same type in that country, or start aircraft from parking, a runway or a carrier, create new trigger conditions and actions, add or remove AI tasks, or add radio channels. ETAs are recomputed only on routes whose stored ETAs match the Mission Editor's calculation; others (for example routes whose points were moved later) are refused. Data in a shape it does not support is shown read-only with the reason and saved unchanged.

37 files written by a development build before 0.4.0a2 were loaded one at a time on a DCS dedicated server; all 37 loaded, started, ran for 30 seconds and logged no error the original did not. Files written with the features added in 0.4.0a3 and later have not been loaded yet. That only shows they load; it does not replace a check in the Mission Editor. Behaviour after DCS updates that change the file format is not checked.

2,504 automated tests (including GUI operation), an audit of the build's bundled files and a self-test of the packaged app. On the development build behind 0.4.0a3 (0.4.0a6 reads and writes missions with the same code; editing changed for western aircraft placement and copies), the 2,623 missions that ship with DCS were saved without changes, and the file names and resource references were the same before and after. On 112 of them, representative edits were saved, reopened and undone with matching results. The ZIP includes usage notes, full license texts and the notices of the bundled runtime. It contains no DCS World data or missions. The program is MIT licensed.
